Flight of the vanities!

I have sat at the computer for the last 15 minutes trying to compose this blog entry. I just don’t understand America so maybe you can help me. Citigroup, my personal banking institution, got a government bailout and at no point after the AIG bank retreat scandal and the Detroit big wigs arriving in Washington in their separate private planes, did anyone inside the penthouse offices of Citigroup think that not canceling the order on the 50 million dollar private jet was not a good idea?

I mean I know the plane was clearly ordered before the financial collapse but really, you didn’t cancel the order. Ok honestly at this point none of these guys can surprise me anymore.

Bayard Rustin was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He was a civil rights activist best known for working with Martin Luther King Jr. and being instrumental in helping to teach him his non violence methods.

Bayard Rustin was one of those in the background people that worked in the Civil Rights movement and helped the gears turn. However for as much as he worked with the movement he was also the victim of its hypocrisy. After working and traveling and being instrumental in helping to plan the 1963 “March on Washington” NAACP Chairman Roy Wilkins did not allow Rustin to receive any public acknowledgment of his work in planning the historic march because Rustin was gay. Bayard spent the rest of his activist career after the passing of the civil rights and voting acts working in politics and as an advocate for black and gay rights. He passed in August in 1987.

So Bayard Rustin, please accept this invitation to the Dinner party of the year. Your opinion, your diversity, and your knowledge of history are more than welcome!

It was a slow news day....

......so i am going to tell a 4 picture story about Chicago night life!


So sometimes you will go out and hey you might get picked up.


And even though you picked up somebody they may not be cute enough to let them know where you live so you just take them around the corner. Anyone who is of a certain age may recognize this move from Sheila E's "Glamorous Life" video.

After a night of drinking and sex and general deviltry you might need a spot of food to eat. There is nothing better at 3am on the weekend than Maxwell Street home of the famous "Pork Chop" sandwich

Polish, pork chop sandwich, hamburger, is all the same when it is all made in the same grease. But it is a gourmet meal.

I want to thank two of my bestest friends KG and Joey for semi posing for the spread....4 more days in Chicago.

President Elect

Tuesday afternoon history was truly made as President Barack Obama was inaugurated as the 44^th President of the United States of America. But the truth is history has been being made since November 4^th of 2008. From the time he won the election now President Obama has been on the job. Perhaps that is the reason why news reporters still have not been able to remove the word “elect” from their vocabulary when referring to the President.

Now honestly I don’t think this is something they are doing on purpose, I just think that perhaps this is the first time in history news reporters had to use the term “President Elect” as much as they did. From the time he was announced President Elect Barack Obama hit the ground running with numerous press conferences and weekly addresses. He gave the news media so much to report on before he ever actually took the oath of office that the term, which even had its own sign and podium, took on a whole new meaning and power.

So I am willing to give the news media (fans and critics) another week or so to get it together before I start my letter writing campaign. I’m watching you liberal media!!!!!

Top Chef and Top Aid

Top Chef judge and straight bear hottie Tom Colicchio was at a charity event last night being hounded by over enthusiastic fans about last weeks elimination when he heard someone screaming for help. Joan Nathan , the American Cookbook author, was choking on a piece of chicken. Tom applied the heimlich manuver and freed the chicken from her throat.

Andy Mangels was born and raised in Montana. He is best known as a writer for comics, science fiction, and cartoon related material. He is also a huge Wonder Woman fan.




I have to say I really admire Andy Mangels. He has been asked for his opinion and made a part of his living on giving the history and his feelings on cartoons that people of my generation grew up with. He has written and directed documentaries or special commentary for DVD releases such as He-Man ,She-Ra, Isis, Ghostbusters, and Star Trek just to name a few. He has also written or co written books for several Star Trek and other pop culture properties. In addition to his writing he is a gay activist giving of himself to many charities and worth causes. He has even run in a couple of International Mr. Leather contest. For any grown kid like me he is a true inspiration.

One of her topics was how we incorrectly praise single mothers who are the cause of raising criminals and maladjusted children and being selfish while doing it. She also took a swipe at single mom Hollywood actresses who only have children to use them to propel her career.

My girl Tina!! You know I am not a new Tina Fey fan I have been following 30 Rock since the first season long before anyone ever heard of "Sarah Palin". Well every dark cloud has a silver lining and the barracuda from Alaska put Tina on the national stage. Tina Fey Golden Globe best actress of the year!

We here at Derrick’s Window would like to send a special thank you to Laura Bush. You have been one of the quieter “First Ladies” but there is one decision you made while occupying the White House that I must stand up and applaud you for.



August 14th 2005 you appointed the first woman of color to be Executive Chef of the White House, Cristeta Comeford.



Chef Cristeta Comeford is an immigrant of the Philippines coming to America in 1985. There are conflicting stories (depending on the source) on if she received her degree in food technology before or after she arrived in America but she did begin her studies in the Philippines. After building a resume in kitchens across the country and Vienna, she was recruited for the Clinton White House. In 2005 when outgoing Executive Chef Walter Schieb III, who had recruited Chef Comeford, retired he put in the good word for her to be his replacement. And so Laura Bush made it so…



Soon to be First Lady, Michelle Obama recently announced that Chef Comeford was going to stay on as her role as Executive Chef for the Obama family. She appreciated the fact that Chef Comeford is a mother and recognizes the value of good nutrition for children.



I know covering female chefs is not normally my thing, but you have to give a sister her props when she deserves them.

So Congratulations to Chef Cristeta Comeford and Thank you Laura and Michelle!

I just saw Barack speaking from Fairfax, Virginia. He didn't say anything new or different than he said before. "Reach across the aisle" " Accountability" "Transparency" "Bringing America together" all things I heard during the election. What I have not heard is anything from the White House. Nothing from "W" about the national crisis, the recession that this country seems to have "found" itself in. 12 days...it's like waiting on Christmas.

XXX Bailout

This may be the first group going to the hill to request a bailout that I am in favor of. According to an article in Next Month’s Atlantic, the question is asked “Has the recession affected the porn industry. According to Larry Flynt and Joe Francis the recession has hit the triple X scene just as hard as any other part of America and they are just as important as the Auto industry. While no date was given when this would happen, it seems the two naughty entrepreneurs will be heading to Washington to request 5 billion dollars in bailout money. My two big questions are “Will they be arriving on the hill with scantly clad buxom blonds and as a black gay man ,will they be dropping any of that 5 billion down to the company’s that cater to me? Staying tuned to CSPAN!!!!!!!!

Malcolm Jamal Warner was born August 18^th 1970 and raised in Jersey City, NJ. He is best known around the world for playing Theo Huxtable for the entire 8 year run of “The Cosby Show”

While it is true that Malcolm is known for his on screen personas on Cosby, Malcolm and Eddie, and Jeremiah, what a lot of people miss are the other skills that lends to the global community. He is also an accomplished speaker, writer and director but for me what helps him make the invite list is his musical talent. Malcolm has for years honed his craft as a musical artist with his band “Miles Long”. In 2003 he released his first album “The Miles Long Mixtape” and in 2007 his follow up “Love & Other Social Issues”
