Samuel Jackson Modern Marvel

Word has gotten out that Samuel Jackson, the actor you can’t quite pin down, is in negotiations for a nine picture deal with Marvel Entertainment, the company responsible for bringing long time superheroes Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, and The X-Men to the big screen with multi-million dollar payoffs.

Samuel Jackson is no stranger to the multi millions at the box office either with hits including The Star Wars prequels, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and Jurassic Park , to name just a few. Jackson has already made a brief appearance for Marvel in the first Iron Man movie, as Col. Nick Fury, and is scheduled to appear with star Robert Downey Jr., in the sequel to be released in 2010.

If this deal goes through, Samuel will be reprising the role of Col. Fury in nine more Marvel pictures including Thor, Captain America , The Avengers, and perhaps even a Col. Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. stand alone.

For comic book geeks like myself, who have lived with a majority of all-white heroes for the last 30 years, this is great news. The Nick Fury character has always been Marvel’s eye-patch-wearing answer to James Bond, and dates back forty plus years, first appearing in “Nick Fury and his Howling Commandos,” during World War II.

In 2000, Marvel created a separate line of books under the imprint, “The Ultimate Universe.” Set in a separate reality from the 50-plus year old standard Marvel universe, it re-imagined popular characters with more contemporary themes and origins. They also took the opportunity to create a more diverse universe of heroes to reflect a more realistic modern age. One of those changes was in making Nick Fury black. As the character gained in popularity, Samuel Jackson was approached by Marvel, asking if his likeness could be used for the character, and he consented.

Tuesdays Invitation!

Eve Arden (born Eunice M. Quedens) was born April 30, 1908 in Mill Valley, California. She was an actress best known as a lovable teacher in the old classic “Our Miss Brooks” and more currently as the Principal in the classic musical Grease.

My first introduction to Eve Arden was on the classic “I Love Lucy” when Lucy and company went to Hollywood. Even in the way she delivered her one line cutting Ethyl she stood out. Since then I have seen her in several more films and she has a wit and tongue and cheekiness about her that will endure her to the most harden heart. No matter what role I have seen her in, she has managed to bring the same humor and vulnerability to every role while always playing that role to its height. She was also one of the first women to have her own comedy variety show on television, "The Eve Arden Show". Ms. Arden passed in 1982 of Heart Disease and Cancer. I am sorry that I did not discover her in life but she has left a wonderful bog shoulder legacy behind.

So Eve Arden please accept this invitation to the Dinner party of the year. Your humor, your cleverness, and your mouth are more than welcome!

E.J. Flavors (yes that is his real last name) was born and raised in Westbury, NY July 16, 1967. He is one of a growing number of music fans and computer geeks who have combined their resources to become internet DJ’s

E.J. Flavors is many things a preemie, a Virgo in a Cancer’s body, a drummer and a junkie. His drugs of choice are gadgets and music and usually they can interact with each other. Now I like music a lot, and I use to think I knew something about music until I met E.J. I have no idea how he keeps all that music knowledge along with the knowledge of his collection stuffed in his brain. I also admire him for being on the forefront of the E.J. makes geekdom look cool.

So E.J. Flavors., please accept this invitation to the Dinner party of the year. Your opinion, your diversity, and your geekiness are more than welcome!

Ronald Fenty, Rihanna's Dad, Speaks Out

Rihanna's father speaks to People magazine about the alleged beating of his daughter by boyfriend Chris Brown.

“I didn’t believe it,” he said to People regarding Brown’s alleged attack of his daughter after a pre-Grammy party in Los Angeles.

"I know my daughter," he continued. But when it came to Chris Brown, Fenty seemed to be blindsided by the situation. “They seemed pretty happy,” he recalled after last seeing them this past summer. “I don’t know what went wrong.”

"You think you know somebody, but you really don't," he added.

The 55-year-old salesman and freelance clothing designer saw his daughter this past week and noted that Rihanna was indeed injured in the altercation.

“There is some bruising. She will be all right. I think so,” he said without going into too much detail about his daughter’s condition. He did say that Rihanna was spending time with her friends while she heals from her injuries.

Although it is unknown whether Brown and Rihanna will continue their relationship after these rocky times, Rihanna’s father did make suggestion.

"If it were me, I'd move on!"

Yes Ronald, I agree, when it comes to Chris Brown I think we should all move on!!!!

Phelps beats "bong" rap!

According to news reports today Michael Phelps, Olympic swimming sensation and confessed masterbonger, will not have to face any criminal charges for his photographed indiscretion earlier this month. In fact some of the public has even jumped to his defense even going so far as to boycott the Kellogg Company for dropping him as a spokesperson.

Sheriff Leon Lott has concluded his investigation and has decided no charges will be filled against the 14 gold medal winner. Ironically enough 8 other people who were supposedly at the party that night got locked the hell up. Sheriff Lott was able to pull evidence together from a party that took place in November that he found out about in February and arrest 7 people for possession and 1 person for selling. The one picture from the party with Phelps taking a hit from the bong was not enough evidence however to prove that he had broken any laws.

I did some research in the crime rate of Columbia, South Carolina where all this took place and it seems that for a city that has about 113,000 residents that had a report of 586 violent crimes by the end of 2007. Perhaps Sheriff Lott could direct a few more resources to the rapes, murders, and arsons that go on in that city instead of locking up “some” people who broke the law months after the fact.

In doing my research for this piece I came across a few “grumblings” from Richmond county residences. This one is my favorite by far.

Sheriff selective about criminals he pursues

My purse was stolen a few years ago. The thief took my credit card and used it at gas stations and a Wal-Mart in Richland County to run up more than $1,000 in charges.

When my credit card company informed me of this, I filed a report with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. I also went to the Wal-Mart to see if its loss-prevention department would tell me anything. I was shown a copy of the credit card receipt signed by the thief (who signed his name John Smith). I was also told that a sheriff’s deputy could obtain a copy of the surveillance tape showing the thief making the purchase.

This evidence along with the surveillance tapes that could be obtained from the area gas stations gave me a ray of hope that the thief may be caught.

Upon returning with this news to the Sheriff’s Department, I was told someone would “look into it.”

I never heard anything from Lott’s office. Too bad it was not Michael Phelps who stole my purse.

T.D. Jakes releases statement based on son's arrest!

Bishop T.D. Jakes' statement in full

"
As parents, we occasionally feel that our children do not live up to our highest and best ideals. When they do not, we don't diminish our love for them as recompense for our disapproval. Like our children, we also are not infallible nor do we profess to be. Our now adult son Jermaine is 29, but when he was at home he was a recipient of correction, compassion and wise counsel. We hope that the light of what we believe will guide him through times of contradiction and moments of concern as he continues to mature.

In spite of the family pain we feel from this unfortunate situation, it has given us a chance to show him the same help, support, and restorative grace for which our family and church is noted. Through our ministry at The Potter's House, as well as our own home, we have for years offered help in the time of need to all adults, our five children and other people's children.

It is in moments like these that I am so grateful that we do not preach that we are the solution, but we look to Christ for resolution. So then, as a very human family with real issues, like many other people, we will draw from the same well of grace to which we have led others to drink and be refreshed."

We here at Derrick's Window wish for the best of T.D. Jakes and his family and hope they get the "desired" results.

Chris Brown speaks......but does not say anything!

Chris Brown has released a statement thru People Magazine…..

“Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired. I am seeking the counseling of my pastor, my mother and other loved ones and I am committed, with God’s help, to emerging a better person. Much of what has been speculated or reported on blogs and/or reported in the media is wrong. While I would like to be able to talk about this more, until the legal issues are resolved, this is all I can say except that I have not written any messages or made any posts to Facebook, on blogs or any place else. Those posts or writing under my name are frauds.”

So the campaign to save the career of Chris Brown has officially begun. Black mothers, I know we all have faith in the lord but, for you do anything short of removing anything from your daughter’s belongings with the initials “CB” is just an open invitation to allow your girl children to be on the receiving end of some man’s abuse in years to come.

Legal matters will not allow him to go into details but do we really need them? You beat, hit, punched, and bit (we must never forget the biting you sissy) some grown person who did not have a gun pressed to your head or the head of a loved one.

Republican Votes and Starbucks

To:

U.S. Representative Brian Bilbray
2348 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington
, D.C. 20515

Dear Representative Bilbray

Caught your appearance on Hardball with Chris Matthews Friday night and let me just say your looking well and rested. I enjoyed the interview/debate you had and especially enjoyed the part where you said the republicans did not vote for the stimulus bill because you were all called at ten minutes to midnight and informed there would be a call for a vote the following morning. Personally I blame Starbucks. I know President Obama has a full staff of kitchen folks at the white house and it would be naïve to believe that among the staff was not one coffee barista. Clearly putting President Obama at an advantage as none of the DC Starbucks are operating at that time of night.

And then to call everyone in the House at that time of night when Starbucks is not ready available and ask you to sacrifice a good nights sleep right before a extended holiday weekend because there is a national crisis. I mean yes people are losing their homes and being thrown on the streets and the unemployment numbers are higher than they have ever been. But to be asked to sacrifice a night sleep to do the job the people of California sent you to Washington to do. And on top of that to be asked to do it when there is not a single Starbucks open at that time of night. Trust me I checked, there are no 24 hour Starbucks in the DC area with the exception of the one at Union Station. But who can fault you for not knowing that, it took me a few phone calls to get that information myself and even then it closes between 2- 4 am.

The Republican response to punish the Democrats, the President, and of course the people of this country because you were asked to respond to a crisis and do your job outside of normal business hours is perfectly understandable.

Well that is all, I just wanted to write and send my support to you and the other Republicans that voted no on the bill because you were informed about it so late at night, and of course to tell you I understand that lack of Starbucks can stop you dead in your tracks.

Storybook Love.....

In honor of Valentine's Day I decided to pay homage to some of my favorite comic characters. My favorite couples from the Bill Willingham comic book fables.

First up we have Rodney and June. Rodney and June were both wooden members of the Adversary's army. Though it is very much against the nature of people carved from the magic grove by Geppetto and his assistants these two found each other in the midst of war. After a brief courtship they decide to write to Father Geppetto and request they are turned into flesh and blood so they can fully express their love for each other. The only price was that they had to become cutthroats and spies as payment.

Next up are Beauty and The Beast. Beauty took over as Deputy Mayor of Fable town when Prince Charming won the race for Mayor against Old King Cole. Beauty works side by side with he husband Beast who became Fabletown sheriff when she was appointed deputy Mayor. These two are the personification of be careful what you ask for but you just might get it.

Saving the best for last is the most unlikeliest of couples. The original story book princess Snow White and her second husband Bigby (big bad) Wolf. After working together just this side of three centuries these two were put under a spell by Blue Beard the pirate (see this book is very involved) and sent out to the wilderness where at some point they "get busy". After waking from the spell a few days later the two have to depend on each other as the fight for their lives against a murderous Goldilocks hellbent on their deaths. During the run for their lives Bigby comes clean about his love for Snow and she begins to warm up to him, until a few days later she finds out she is pregnant. After giving birth to septuplets (yes she had a litter) she and Bigby go there separate ways. But true love is rarely ended so easy and after a few adventures the two are reunited and given a whole valley for all their years of service to Fabletown. The couple lives in the valley with their seven children Ghost,Blossom, Ambrose,Winter, Darien, Theresa, and Connor.

So there you have it a readers digest version of my favorite fairytale couples. I want to wish all of those living their own fairytale love a Happy Valentine's Day and to those who find themselves single this time around, there is nothing wrong with loving yourself (no I didn't mean it like that!!!!)

DC comics give 2009 to the Women

Anyone who has read comics on the Semi-regular basis over the last few years has come to recognize that the big two, Marvel and DC, are addressing the severe lack of diversity that the silver age clearly lacked.

The two most recent changes over at DC are the introduction of Super Woman and the Graduation of Bat Woman to her own book.

Batwoman was reintroduced almost two years ago during the “Infinite Crisis” company wide storyline. She made some appearances after a huge hype machine but never really found a home. Well with the current Batman RIP storyline Batman has disappeared from Gotham and is supposedly dead. So Kath Kane, wealth socialite by day and high heeled crime buster by night, will be starring in Detective comics for at least 12 issues.

Over in Superman the earth just fought of an invasion of Kryptonians (don’t ask) and all these super survivors have taken up residence on a planet in opposite orbit of Earth on the dark side of the moon (I told you don’t ask). One of the Kryptonians has decided t that is to turn traitor against her people and work with the governments of Earth to develop plans to fight off a Kryptonian invasion (I keep saying don’t ask!!). We know it’s not Super girl but that is pretty much all we know about her at this point.

Regardless of how I feel about the storylines it is good to see actually “Women” being thrown into the spotlight and not just “girls”.

Wonder Woman will still be Wonder Woman!!!

Son of TD Jakes arrested for lewd behavior

Bishop TD Jakes sons Jermaine jakes was arrested back in January in a park in Dallas, Texas. It seems he approached two men in the park and “unsheathed his sword” so to speak at them. At that point he began to explore the pros of “self love”.

At this point he found out that the two objects of his performance art were undercover vice cops. He was then arrested for lewd behavior.

Faith Johnson, an attorney for Jermaine Jakes, issued a statement that read: "We are aware of potential allegations involving Jermaine Jakes and are undertaking our own investigation of these allegations at this time. Given an apparent government investigation, we have no further comment at this time."

For all my straight readers that might not be in the know, public parks are well known pick up spots for gay men. In the last few years most cities have cracked down in some form or another to curtail this activity.

Cotton pickin mind!!!!!!

Can anybody help me understand?

A grammar school Black history event was recently canceled in Hattiesburg Mississippi. Lillie Burney Elementary school had planned “Cotton picking day” for some of their students. The day included a trip to an actual cotton field where the children, dressed as slaves, would spend the afternoon picking cotton.

I feel the need to type that again. The children of this predominantly black school were going to be taken out to an actual cotton field dressed as slaves in rags and overalls and were going to pick cotton that afternoon.

Yes it does not sound any better the second time you read it does it? When the story showed up in my mailbox I read it three times. I sat for fifteen minutes and read it again. I asked one of my partners, who I think is a much more fare and balanced thinker than I am, to explain anyway this could be a good thing. He instead turned the TV up and kept watching his movie.

The only reason the day was canceled was because a parent read his son’s February calendar from school and “cotton picking day” didn’t seem to right to him either. After a few calls to the school the Principal went to the black history committee, made up of teachers in the school, and it was decided that the day should be changed to career day instead. Cotton picking day!

The school superintendent stood by the principal’s decision to have the day and later to cancel the day.

Cotton picking day!!!!

Once Bitten Twice Gay

I am not sure where to begin. For those who don’t know because they have more important things to worry about (like real grown up stuff) Rihanna and Chris Brown are a couple. They were supposed to appear Sunday at the Grammy award and they both cancelled literally at the eleventh hour.

I had to put that in because until today I didn’t know any of this stuff.

Anyway Monday the police were looking for Chris and he turned himself in. He was later released but it as details leak out into the media it is becoming clear this is not going away. In cases of domestic abuse once the police become involved the charges are run thru even if the victim chooses not to press charges.

Now this is my own 0.02 on the subject of lil’ Chris Brown. There is almost no part of me that thinks Chris Brown is straight. I don’t say this out of some secret love or yearning for him, in truth I like my men fully grown and most of these little hip hoppers and rappers whatever don’t fit the bill. But Chris has always come off to me as just that gay kid, not effeminate just …gay.

I read a few reports that said Rihanna had not only been punched by she had been bitten. C’mon, he bit her (allegedly) I mean really? Up and down her arm. That is pretty much how girls (back in my day, today girls have a much greater martial skill level) fought.

Now the purpose of my blog. Domestic violence is a very serious subject and the reasons for it are still being studied, documented, and debated. But I will tell you one thing I do know for fact. Gay men who are not accepting of themselves or closeted or ashamed of who they are, are capable of many self destructive things. Domestic Abuse is just one of them, and while I am by no means trying to create a plausible excuse for what Chris (allegedly) did. One can say that this behavior is not unexpected and due to the climate of hostility of homosexuality in the black community a forgone conclusion.

So the next time you support a preacher who teaches hate, the next time you hear a kid being ridiculed for being a fag and a sissy or hey the next time you disown a family member for trying to live a life they are comfortable with, you are assisting in the destruction of the black community much more than homosexuality ever could.

He bit her…man oh man

Tuesdays Invitation!

Black History Month

Brigadier General Benjamin Oliver Davis, Sr. (July 1, 1877 – November 26, 1970) was an American general and the father of Benjamin O. Davis Jr. He was the first African-American general in the U.S. Army.

Benjamin O. Davis, Sr., was born in Washington, D.C., on July 1, 1877. His biographer Marvin Fletcher (author of America's First Black General, Benjamin O. Davis, Sr., 1880-1970) has presented evidence of his birth records indicating that he was born in May 1880 and later lied about his age so that he could enlist in the army without the permission of his parents. It is the earlier date that appears on his grave at Arlington National Cemetery, however.) He was a student at Howard University when—as a result of the start of the War with Spain—he entered the military service on July 13, 1898 as a temporary first lieutenant of the 8th United States Volunteer Infantry. He was mustered out on March 6, 1899, and on June 18, 1899, he enlisted as a private in Troop I, U.S. 9th Cavalry Regiment (one of the original Buffalo Soldier regiments), of the Regular Army. He then served as corporal and squadron sergeant major, and on February 2, 1901, he was commissioned a second lieutenant of Cavalry in the Regular Army.

He was promoted to first lieutenant on March 30, 1905; to captain on December 24, 1915; to major (temporary) on August 5, 1917; and to lieutenant colonel (temporary) on May 1, 1918. He reverted to his permanent rank of captain on October 14, 1919, and was promoted to lieutenant colonel on July 1, 1920; to colonel on February 18, 1930; to brigadier general (temporary) on October 25, 1940. He was retired on July 31, 1941, and recalled to active duty with the rank of brigadier general the following day.

His first service as a commissioned officer of the Regular Army was in the Philippine Islands with the 9th Cavalry on the Island of Samar. In August 1901, he was assigned to duty with the 2d Squadron, 10th Cavalry, and returned from the Philippines with that organization for service as Adjutant at Fort Washakie, Wyoming. In September 1905, he was made Professor of Military Science and Tactics at Wilberforce University, Ohio, remaining there until September 1909, when, after a brief tour of duty at Fort Ethan Allen, Vermont, he was detailed as Military Attache to Monrovia, Liberia, until January 1912.

He then was assigned to duty with the 9th Cavalry at Fort D.A. Russell (predecessor of Fort Francis E. Warren), Wyoming, and at Douglas, Arizona. He remained with his regiment on border patrol duty until February 1915, when he again was assigned to duty as Professor of Military Science and Tactics at Wilberforce University, Ohio. He remained there until the summer of 1917, when he went to the Philippines for duty as Supply Officer of the 9th Cavalry at Camp Stotsenburg. He returned to the United States in July 1920, and was assigned to duty as Professor of Military Science and Tactics at Tuskegee Institute, Alabama, where he served until July 1924, when he became Instructor of the 372d Infantry, Ohio National Guard, stationed at Cleveland, Ohio.

In July 1929 he returned to Wilberforce University as Professor Military Science and Tactics serving until late 1930 when he was detailed on special duty with the U.S. Department of State in connection with affairs relating to the Republic of Liberia.
In late 1931 he was assigned again to serve as Professor of Military Science and Tactics at Tuskegee, Alabama, where he remained until August 1937 when he was transferred to Wilberforce University.

During the summers of 1930 to 1933, he was placed on detached service for duty with the Pilgrimage of War Mothers and Widows, making frequent trips to Europe on behalf of that organization. For his work on this assignment he received letters of commendation from the Secretary of War and from the Quartermaster General.

In August 1937 he was transferred from Tuskegee Institute to Wilberforce University. After a year at that institution, he was assigned as instructor and Commanding Officer of the 369th Infantry, New York National Guard. This organization was later changed to the 369th Coast Artillery (Anti-aircraft) Regiment. In January 1941 he was ordered to Fort Riley, Kansas, for duty as a brigade commander with the 2d Cavalry Division. The following June, he was assigned to Washington, D.C., for duty as Assistant to the Inspector General.
He was assigned to the European Theater of Operations in September 1942 on special duty as Advisor on Negro Problems and upon completion of this special duty he returned to the United States and resumed his duties in the Inspector General's Department.

In November 1944, he became Special Assistant to the Commanding General, Communications Zone, European Theater of Operations, stationed in Paris, France, and in November 1945 was granted a period of detached service for the purposes of recuperation and rehabilitation. In January 1946 he again became Special Assistant to The Inspector General, Washington, D.C. He retired on 14 July 1948, as the senior Brigadier General on the 184 member Permanent list, and after having served fifty years. General Davis died on November 26, 1970. His remains are interred in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. His son, General Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., (U.S. Air Force, Retired), is the fourth African American graduate of the U.S. Military Academy and the nation's second African American general officer.

Black History Month

Mae Carol Jemison, M.D. (born October 17, 1956) was the first African-American woman to travel to space. She went into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on September 12, 1992.

Dr. Jemison was a Science Mission Specialist (at NASA first) on the STS-47 Spacelab J flight, a US/Japan joint mission. She conducted experiments in life sciences and material sciences, and was co-investigator in the bone Cell Research experiment in the Spacelab laboratory module. Jemison resigned from NASA on March 8, 1993.

Chemical engineer, scientist, physician, teacher and astronaut, she has a wide range of experience in technology, engineering, and medical research. In addition to her extensive background in science, she is well-versed in African and African-American Studies and is trained in dance and choreography. Her inspiration for going into NASA was African-American actress Nichelle Nichols, who portrayed Lt. Cmdr. Uhura on Star Trek.

Dr. Jemison founded The Jemison Group, Inc., located in Houston, Texas, to research, develop and implement advanced technologies suited to the social, political, cultural and economic context of the individual, especially for the developing world. Current projects include: Alpha, (TM) a satellite based telecommunication system to improve health care in West Africa; and The Earth We Share, (TM) an international science camp for students ages 12 to 16, that utilizes an experiential curriculum.

This attitude and her high achievements in historically exclusionary fields led Dartmouth College to invite her to its Hanover campus in 1993, where she taught a course on Space Age Technology and Developing Countries. Dr. Jemison is currently a member of the Dartmouth faculty in the Environmental Studies Program and is Director of The Jemison Institute for Advancing Technology in Developing Countries at Dartmouth College. The Institute was established as an agent for identifying, assessing, researching and implementing advanced technologies that may be employed advantageously to the development of less industrialized nations.

Dr. Jemison is the host and a technical consultant to World of Wonders series produced by GRB Entertainment and seen weekly on the Discovery Channel. She is also in demand as a speaker to civic and government organizations, schools and corporations around the country and internationally.

Awards and honors she has received include Essence Award (1988); Gamma Sigma Gamma Women of the Year (1989); Honorary Doctorate of Science, Lincoln College, PA (1991); Honorary Doctor of Letters, Winston-Salem, NC (1991); McCall's 10 Outstanding Women for the 90s (1991); Pumpkin Magazine's (a Japanese Monthly) One of the Women for the Coming New Century (1991); Johnson Publications Black Achievement Trailblazers Award (1992); Mae C.
