I am not wearing a mask to fight the swine flu bit for those who may feel the need to cover up but don't feel the plain white mask is really you. Japanese artist Yoriko Yoshida has just the thing for you. This is just a small sample to see more visit his site here.

Sarah Palin's alter ego.....

A few weeks ago it came to me that Pat Buchanan was a modern day Archie Bunker; well a few days ago it came to me who Sarah Palin is. For the closest analog to the Alaska governor turned super star I have to go back a few years and across the pond to the show “Keeping up Appearances”.

For those who are unfamiliar with the BBC classic “Keeping up Appearances” was a show centered around Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced according to her Bouquet) who lives a middle class life but dreams to be on top of the social ladder. Every episode is about the great pains that Hyacinth goes through to impress her friends, neighbors, and strangers while deflecting attention away from her two poor sisters, brother in law, and slightly off the beam father.

Hmmm a social climbing woman trying to impress and make people think she is better than she is while her family is constantly being themselves and causing her to do spin control. Yeah Sarah Palin is Hyacinth Bucket….

The big word of the week and why nobody is talking about it

To anyone who has not been living under a rock you are probably very tired of one word in particular, torture. President Obama released the Bush administration torture memos and the news has exploded with ideas, opinions, and talking heads. That is not surprise, it is the hottest story going around, but what has surprised me is the lack of “torture” in the blogs that I follow.

Now I know everybody has an asshole and it seems everybody has a blog, but I like to believe that the ones I follow daily are people who are very talented with a strong point of view and the ability to not only make their point but back it up. But with the exception of one, who is an Obama detractor, nobody else has gotten into torture talk.

Here at the window I try to balance news with pop culture, some gay issues, color identity, music, and fun. But this week has had me very limited in things to post about because I am all tortured out. I think in this matter I am not alone. Most of my sidebar blogs are people of color and I just find it impossible to believe that within this multi-sexual, multicultural rainbow, nobody has an opinion.

I can only chalk this up to the fact that these people, whose opinions I really do respect are disturbed by torture. I mean so much so to the point that they are not discussing it. Personally while I want everyone involved to be punished for these things that happened I think the thing that bothers me more is the knowledge that these things happen everyday. People of color locked away in jailhouses for traffic stops or other minor infractions. The fear that every black man that I know has that guilty or innocent , if you ever get put in the back of a police cruiser, you life is officially in the hands of whatever Gods you hold dear, because you may never be seen again.

A fear that strikes to close to home is too much to talk about.

Gaming gone too far

I like video games. I mean I had an Atari 2600 and all the subsequent generation of video games. I mean at some point in my life I too had Pac-Man fever. However as with all things people can take things to far.

On and Off I like to play a MMORPG called City of Heroes. MMORPG stands for Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. Basically all those strange kids you saw in some dark corner playing dungeons and dragons back in the day have taken the show online. I will also admit that not only was I one of those strange kids back then, I have lost many an hour, ok honestly I have looked up and 12 hours have gone by, but I did realize that was a once in awhile indulgence.

This however is too much geek even for me.

Students at MIT have created a hut in tribute to the most popular MMORPG on the market right now, World of Warcraft. This hut comes with an integrated computer system with surround sound, a water supply, a hot plate, and the chair doubles as a toilet. Yeah you read right, a toilet. I don’t think I have ever been so involved in any game that I could not stop for a potty break, in fact in the language that exist in MMORPG dom there exist the very short term “bio”. Which basically means you’re taking a biological break and will be back as soon as possible.

Looks like a computerized outhouse to me, is that not how Terminator was suppose to start?

No Go for Blago......

Today a judge ruled “Hell Nawr” on former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich’s request for permission to leave the country to participate in NBC’s upcoming reality show “I’m a celebrity, get me out of here!”

Ok the judge didn’t really do a Sophia impersonation, but he did say that he felt that the former governor did not appreciate the magnitude of his legal situations and so he denied the request to travel to Costa Rica.

Personally I think rod is enough of a realty star already, and that star is burning up fast. Don’t drop the soap!!!!

You mean unattractive does not equal useless???

Let me go on record here “I don’t much care for the word ugly” especially when you are referring to another human being. In all fairness to my knowledge I have only ever referred to one person in the world as ugly, but if you knew this guy I think we would all agree. I only mention that one because it struck a friend of mine as odd when he heard it come out of my mouth. But I digress I don’t care for the word, mostly cause looks are subjective and who am I to put my terms of pretty on you?

So imagine my surprise when I was surfing the net today and over at Huffington there are all these stories about Susan Boyle and they are all calling her Ugly. Now my ego can handle a lot (truth be told I was voted a hot ghetto mess in one of those viral emails that went around but I survived) but if I went on the web one day and saw story after story about how ugly I was but it was ok cause I could sing, I am not sure how much compliment I would be taking from that, in fact being the slightly vain person I am I would not leave the house for a month.

For those still not in the know about Susan Boyle (yes you mother follow) she is the newest internet/British/American sensation. She is on the show “Britain’s Got Talent” there American Idol but geared way more toward talent than looks. This ducky can sing…no that is wrong she can SANG!!!! But she is not “pretty”. This apparently has baffled television networks.

I literally read an article today called “Talented Ugly Person Baffles The World”. I mean with a title like that how can she not be flattered. Again I digress the article goes on to say how all these television executives are having meetings about ugly people on the screen. They didn’t know that the unattractive actually had merit and talent. I mean why don’t you just take the girl outside and beat her with a stick!!!!! I am really torn here, I want Susan to do well but I don’t want her to be the poster child for “ugly” talented people.

But maybe this will get some more regular looking but extremely talented singers on show like American Idol , which I completely disavowed when Melinda Doolittle ,clearly one of the most talented singers to grace their stage, did not win.

In the end what so we learn form this? The search for beauty can be truly an ugly thing to behold.

Truth you can believe in.....

Whoever thought Janeane Garofalo would ever make my race radar. but there she was on Countdown with Keith Olbermann calling it as she say it, or more importantly as it was...

The blog I tried not to write…..

Excuse me, forgive me, and pardon me! I have to put myself on the sorry list! I have done myself and all my readers a disservice. You see there has been something on my mind and I tried not to express myself. I tried to push it back down the pipes so it would go away but it just wound up clogging the works and then nothing was coming out. So I give in to the words and here they are…

Where the hell are the ALPHAbets? You know exactly who I am talking about, the organizations who’s names are to long to say every time you refer to them so we just cal them the N double A C P or GLAAD. I mention these two in particular because they should have been here.

I am sure most of you know the story of Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover, the 11 year old kid who committed suicide because the kids were teasing him about being gay. If you need the full story click here, then come back so I can make my point, No I’ll wait!

Up to date? Good! So a child kills himself and we tsk, and nobody does anything. Where is Jesse (I should really go sit down somewhere) Jackson or Al Sharpton and his Action network? Where is GLAAD the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation? Or my personal favorite the so in touch National Association for the Advancement of Colored People? Well??? I’m waiting.

Yeah that is what I thought, you know what Fuck you alphabets, a child died because homophobia is a rampant monster in the Black community and this child was so scared and so taunted that his only escape was to end his life. And you fucking glory hounds have not done shit! I guess if it ain’t about Gay Marriage or President Obama respectively yall don’t give a fuck. But you know what, a child is dead and his mother grieves and homophobia is clearly ok because you “Leaders” have sat silent.

Ok I am done, GLAAD you can go back to planning the next gala event that the average gay can’t afford to go to but will indeed be star studded. NAACP well I don’t know what you have been doing and I don’t think your relevant so you go back to doing that.

A child killed himself and homophobia is ok, what the hell is wrong with you people?!?!

Checking more than one box

With the upcoming census fast approaching, more and more people are making the demand to be heard for there multiple racial backgrounds. One company is cashing in on the need to be heard.

Multiracial Apparel was designed to bring awareness and pride for those who identify as multiracial and/or multiethnic. It is the first company of its kind to celebrate mixed race people and families. Other identities we explore through our clothing line include those who are involved in interracial relationships, as well as transracial adoptees and their families.”

Ahh Labels.

Food is a history lesson

Travel Channel ran a marathon of Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern this weekend. Now for regular readers you know what a big fan of food I am in general. Food Network is tagged as a favorite on the remote and I get email updates from the network all the time. The travel channel also has some food show that I tune into but I never realized until today that food can be more than pleasure and sustenance. Food is also a history book and map on the mentality of people.

This idea came to me as I caught the last part of the Ethiopian episode. Andrew was in a hut with the natives eating camel. In itself not a big deal, we eat many animals here in this country that others in different countries might look twice about. No the thing was they were eating the camel meat raw. Now I like my steak rare and I love the sushi, but raw camel meat, yes I would try it because I am open to trying a lot of stuff, but I wondered how this came about.

I know a couple things about Ethiopia, not a lot but a friend of mine married a woman from there and I have had several chances to sit and dine (nothing like the feast they prepare) and ask my ignorant raised in America questions. Ethiopians are a hardy people who have never been conquered by any other nation and people. I mean in their whole history they have repelled everybody that rolled up on them. That in itself is amazing, but back to my point. The eating of the raw camel meat came about very matter of factly. Warriors who were out on a war campaign at night needed to eat, and because these people are true warriors they did not want to give away their position with cooking fires, so they ate the meat raw.

As I learn more and more about food it serves to build bridges for me when it comes to other cultures. Who knows, maybe some day world peace will be brought on by every culture sharing their version of chitterlings.

Well maybe not!

It's Getting Dark

One of my favorite comic books has been on fire the last two years and it looks like there is no putting it out now. Green Lantern & its sister book Green Lantern Corps has been in the midst of the ultimate color war for the last two years. For those ungeeked Green Lantern is the story of a man who is given a magic/science based ring that allows him to create pretty much anything he can think of as long as his will power is strong enough. There are at least two Green Lanterns (a title not a codename) for every sector of space and they all belong to the Green Lantern Corps. They are for lack of a better word Space Police.

First it was the Sinestro War with the will Powered fueled Green Lanterns versus the Fear powered Yellow Lanterns. After a hard won fight that took place over the summer, we the readers learned this was simply the beginning of darker days as the war of light was fast approaching. Since the end of the war we have been introduced to love powered violet lanterns or Star Sapphires, The Hate filled Red Lanterns, the forever Hopeful Blue Lanterns and the greedy Orange Lanterns. And while there are still a few more colors that have yet to appeared DC is gearing up for the baddest of mama jamas The Black Lanterns.

What makes the Black Lanterns such a big deal is that their corps is made up of the deceased and with all the big story lines over at DC there has been a lot of death. While no actual members have been listed it is rumored that the Black Lanterns will include Hawk man, Hawk girl, The Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, and a Superman (there are a few running around DC right now…don’t ask!) Anyway it’s is gearing up to be super cool and would you believe this whole blog was just supposed to be the upcoming picture, somehow I geeked out all over the keyboard…..

Oh Well

In Brightest Day……In Blackest Night!!!!
